An amazing €13,322.11 was raised at this years annual ‘Walk for Life’, Thank you so much.
Around 500 people put their best foot forward on Sunday for the biggest and best annual charity event on the Costa Blanca – the Walk for Life 2015. It was a sea of pink as far as the eye could see as hundreds upon hundreds gathered at Playa Flamenca beach front to support Maria and the Pink Ladies and raise much-needed funds for Spanish anti-cancer charity the AECC. At the time of going to press it was unknown how much has been raised, but at 5 euros registration fee per walker there total should be at least 2,500 euros. Many of the walkers have been gathering additional sponsorship money and many
people make personal donations on the day. The money will be used to fund the AECC’s early detection programme and support network for those suffering from cancer. Since its inception five years ago the walk has raised just over 60,000 euros for the charity.
The 5k walk began at 10.30am and saw women, men, children… and their pet’s – don their bra’s and fancy dress outfits in every shade of pink imaginable making the procession colourful and eye-catching as it weaved its way from the promenade and around the Orihuela Costa.
The walk as followed by a fun-day event with market stalls and an afternoon of back-to-back entertainment hosted by Sunshine FM and compered by Stevie Spit. Artists included: Karisma, Dan Davy, Richie Alexander, Rob Bonovox, David John Williams as Rod Stewart, Sam Curtis, Gemma, Suzie G, Kye Jaymes, Bennie Boy, Dee and Texas Ted.
The parade was marched out to the sounds of The Torrevieja Pipes and Drums and was led by Maria Wilson and the Pink Ladies. Maria is still recovering from the recent removal of a large tumour, but wasn’t going to let a little thing like a major operation stand in her way and so, thanks to husband Carl, tackled the route in a wheelchair. She was also celebrating being cancer-free for five years, having established The Pink Ladies following her diagnosis with breast cancer. The event ended with all of the artists singing the Walk for Life anthem to Maria, a complete surprise that reduced her and many others to tears.
Maria said: “I asked everyone in the local community to support this year’s event and we have had probably the biggest and best turnout ever, we could not have asked for more. I would like to thank each and every person who either walked, or just came along on the day to provide support. The local community here is absolutely amazing and should be extremely proud of its achievement.”
There are more than 200 types of cancer, each with different causes, symptoms and treatments. 1 in 2 people in the UK born after 1960 will be diagnosed with some form of cancer during their lifetime. However, 450 people survive cancer everyday thanks to research. There are 4,000 scientists fighting cancer and more than 32,053 hours of research have been done into cancer this week alone.
